A handsome 1699 edition of Horace's works, edited by Pieter Burman the Elder, and appended with Jan Rutgers' comments on Horace, Lectiones Venusinae (Horace was from Venouse).

The Odes and Epodes of Horace, Bibliography, Bibliophile Society, 1903, p.88 writes, "This edition, by P. Barmannus, has been called 'useful and creditable.' The type is small and very elegant, almost equaling the beauty of Elzevir."

Physical Attributes -

Measures approx. 14 x 8.5 x 1.25 cm. Calf spine with marbled paper covering the boards. Spine with five raised bands; five compartments with a central gilt floret, and one compartment with the title in gilt on red morocco. Engraved title page. 228 pages.

Condition -

See pictures. Nice binding, it looks recent. Some erased bookseller notes from blank endpapers. Ink drop on top-edge of text block, left ink mark at top-edge throughout. "1699" on page facing title page. Title page with a spot and thumb mark. A little toning throughout. Occasional fox spot, thumb, and dog-eared page. Small face drawn at top-margin of p6. Very occasional annotation, like "x". Erased bookseller notes at rear blank endpapers too.
