This is the memoirs of a man who, during his time, was one of the foremost figures in politics, even winning the Republican Presidential nomination but losing to Grover Cleveland.
I find that these two volumes are of the highest quality and signed by the author. This is not a printed signature. There is another copy (of Volume 1 only) of this edition available on ebay that is also advertised as signed. If you compare the two signatures you will see that they are not the same in length, height, etc. They are indeed individually signed by the author.
This is not surprising considering that if you ebay search 1884 Twenty Years of Congress you'll find that there were a number of different bindings offered. This is obviously the highest quality edition, with a tooled leather binding, gilt in the title and around the inside edge of the board, beautiful marbled flyleafs, and gilt edged text block. There obviously were different binding editions of this book in 1884 and this was the most expensive, sold with the author's signature. These are both very heavy quarto editions, with raised ribbed spines. Each is well over 600 pages.
This memoir tells the story of 1840 to 1860 in Washington D.C., mainly at the Congress, and the events leading up to the Civil War.
Condition of the Books: See pictures. Both have wear to cover. Volume 1 has more wear to edges of spine. The two are mismatched in color, with volume II being a darker brown (Vol.1 was printed in 1884, Vol 2 in 1886). Both are signed on their title sheet. I find no writing or tears.
