A rarity, the fore-edge painting reflects verses within the book on Greenwich Hospital of London (permanent home for retired sailors of the Royal Navy). Often fore-edge paintings are general in nature and do not reflect the text. In addition, J.M.W. Turner illustrated the same verses within (engraved after his sketch). This is a beautiful book, with many other engravings after Turner and several other artists.
The fore-edge painting is beautiful, painted from a rare vantage point on the Hospital. Several people are recreating along the facing banks of the Thames and on the river you see a hospital ship flying a white flag with red cross (medic flag).
Measures 20 x 13 x 3 cm. Leather with gilt and blind tooling. All edges gilt (AEG). Fore-edge painting. Pages (1), viii, 296, (1).
See pictures. Respined, but done well, hard to notice. Edge wear with some rubbing at edges. A few cracks on re-used spine. Inside, the hinges have been repaired and the repair is visible (Japanese paper). No writing in the book. No tissue guards. Very occasional spots. Some bookseller notes on blank unpaginated front endpaper and recto of rear free endpaper.
