A large and impressive collection of "The Works of Francis Bacon... With several Additional Pieces, Never before printed in any Edition of his Works" (thus first).
"To which is prefixed, A NEW LIFE OF THE AUTHOR, by Mr. Mallet"
Frontis illustrations, in folio, by the celebrated artist and antiquarian George Vertue (volume three's is a different artist). Volume one's frontis of Bacon is particularly impressive.
Rare printer's error in the second volume, the printer's mark on the title page is upside down (see picture in ad).
Includes two foldouts taken from the accounts of Sir Francis Bacon.
Volume one includes a four page list of subscribers, which includes many Earls, Dukes and etc.. Mentions a large paper edition... with the wide margins I can't help but wonder if that's what this one is.
About Sir Francis Bacon
Sir Francis Bacon (1561 –1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, and author. He served both as Attorney General and as Lord Chancellor of England. After his death, he remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution.
Each book measures 32 x 21 cm. The set is 24 cm in width. Four volumes. Leather, three of which have had the spines repaired (new spine tucked under original leather of boards; the fourth has a paste over the spine, presumably to match the others (but tooling was forgotten?). Four large frontis illustrations by George Vertue.
Set weighs in at almost 25 lbs.
Tea cup in picture for scale.
Pages - Volume one - (2) frontis, iv, Life - lxxxii, subscribers - iv, 394, index - 19 leaves, Appendix 124 (2)
Volume two - (2) frontis, iv, 564, 2 foldouts, index, (2)
Volume three - (1) frontis, title, 586, index, (2)
Volume four - (2) frontis, title, 740, index, (2)
See pictures. Spines refreshed, three of the volumes in the full spine repair method; the fourth only has a pasted on strip, with no tooling. Original endpapers were retained except vol. 4. The boards and spines have some shelf wear, rubs, etc.. Some corners splaying.
The endpapers have numbers on the pastedown and an "ex libris" plate. The free front endpapers, for several pages in, have the frame look of books where the leather was oiled and the turn-ins bled into the paper, often to the title page and the page after. On the back of the title sheet there is a library "Withdrawn and Sold" stamp. No writing or tears. Margins are wide. Occasional spots. Some pages have toned a little. The frontis engravings have ghosted on the title page a little. Vol 2, page 9 foreedge tear. A strong and clear-to-read set.
