A delightful study of Rome's topographical and architectural antiquities, printed in 1639, with a number of etchings and foldouts for illustration. This is the first state, although printing began in 1638.
Signed by a noted antiquarian of the 19th century (title page), John Yonge Akerman.
Somewhat rare, Worldcat shows only eight copies in the world's libraries.
About the Author
A Jesuit prefect of the School of Humanities at the Collegio Romanio.
Provenance of the Book and Binding
Several ex libris marks of Carolinian schools, one in Rome and one in the U.S.. I believe Akerman may have simply applied his name to the title page, and never was an owner. The Carolinian Seminary in the U.S. just recently purged many of their antiquarian books so I would guess the Carolinian's in Rome passed the book to the U.S. counterpart and its only recently been available for public purchase.
