A reprinting of Thomas Rowlandson's 1815 The English Dance of Death. A collection of Rowlandson's venerable satirical artwork, accompanied by humorous verses. The illustrations in these volumes have been much celebrated (especially in their original 1815 edition, which is now worth thousands).
Physical Attributes -
Each volume measures approx. 17 x 11 x 2.5 cm. 1/2 leather fine binding, with five raised bands. Gilt ruled compartments with the title and volume number in gilt in one compartment, and the year in gilt at the bottom of the spine. Top edge gilt. Pages vol. 1 - 263, 36 illustrations. Pages vol. 2 - 261, 36 illustrations. 72 illustrations in total.
See pictures. A little wear at edges. Top right leather corner of 1st vol has (price sticker?) mark. Erased pencil bookseller marks on 1st blank endpapers (both volumes); small chip (less than 1 cm) and dog eared at top edge of same sheet in vol. 1. Hinges good. No writing or tears. Mostly a handsome pair, much better looking than the original boards these came in.
