The first part of Giovanni Villani's History of His Times by a Citizen of Florence (Historie Universali de Suoi Tempi Di Giovan Villani Cittadino Florentino), covering the years up to 1229 A.D. (his first ten books). Printed by the noted Florentine printing family Giunti (but, in Venice, surprisingly). This edition has interesting historiated initials at the beginning of each book, as well as Giunti printer's marks at the title page and rear colophon.
About the Work -
Villani was inspired to write his Cronica after attending the jubilee celebration in Rome in 1300 and noting the venerable history of that city. He outlined historical events in his Cronica year for year, following a strictly linear narrative format. He provided intricate details on many important historical events of the city of Florence and the wider region of Tuscany, such as construction projects, floods, fires, famines, and plagues. While continuing work on the Cronica and detailing the enormous loss of life during the Black Death in 1348, Villani died of the same illness.
Physical Attributes -
Measures 21.5 x 16 x 4 cm. Limp vellum. Title in old hand on spine in ink. Green silk ties expired. Pastedowns of unknown circa 16th century work (I've done many phrase searches and have been unable to nail down the work). Pages - (3) xvi, 588, 6 (index), (3).
See pictures. Binding worn and cockled, with shelf mark on front board, several holes. Parchment and endpapers have worming, but the text block only has a few small hole examples at front and rear most leaves. Despite the wear of the binding and endpapers, the text block is in an acceptable condition for reading, holding together well and with only occasional spots, and small moisture marks (mostly front index and rear leaves bottom margin). I don't see any annotations in the text. Title page has an annotation but it doesn't touch any of the printing. Page 566 to end, chip at upper right fore-edge margin, circa 2-3 cm. No text affected. Green silk ties expired.
