One of the larger fore-edge paintings we have in the shop is hidden under the gilt fore-edge of this 1845 edition of William Wordsworth's Poetical Works; it measures over 21 cm/8 inches (see picture) and depicts Wordsworth's home, Royal Mount. Two ladies recreate in front of the home, and a man (perhaps Wordsworth) is seen traversing the garden.
About the Work -
This is one of the editions personally overseen by Wordsworth, and has poetry changes unique to this edition, including the first appearance of "Aspects of Christianity in America", found in the Ecclesiastical Sonnets (per William Knight in his 1896 editorial biography).
Physical Attributes -
Measures 24 x 16 x 4.5 cm. Leather, with five raised cords on spine. Title in gilt on spine, and "London 1845" at the bottom of spine in gilt. All edges gilt (AEG). Fore-edge painting of Royal Mount. Pages - frontis, frontis title page plate, xxiv, 619, (1)
See pictures. Some edge and joint wear to binding. The leather was oiled (back when you did that) which ghosted onto the endpapers. The endpapers foxed, which also foxed the pages that were nearest them (frontis, title page, last page). The rest of the text block only has an occasional spot. Some bookseller notes on blank endpapers. I don't see any annotations in the text.
