Napoleon, Imperial Edition. 16 volumes. Limited to 10 copies. Fine bindings.

A sumptuous set. Richly bound in crimson Moroccan, signed by Schleuning and Adams, with tree-calf doublures and silk moire endpapers; the "Imperial Edition", limited to only 10 copies, each illustration/portrait/view in duplicate with one on Japan paper (and the other often colored), facsimile correspondence letters (some fold-out), and a tipped-in manuscript letter of Jerome Bonaparte (Volume one, mentioning his sister Elisa, and "Campo Marzio").

Three works in one 16 volume set; volumes one through six are William Hazlitt's classic Life of Napoleon, volumes 7 to 10 are the memoirs of Napoleon, and volumes 11 to 16 are the memoirs of Madame Junot.
Physical Attributes -

Books measure 22.5 x 15 cm. Set is approximately 70 cm wide. 16 volumes. Crimson Moroccan leather, boards are gilt ruled and have a central medallion of an "N" within a wreath. Five raised cords to spines with cross pattee in gilt on them, and with six gilt ruled compartments; "Napoleon, title, volume, "Imperial Edition" all in gilt, and two "N" in wreath and two French Imperial Eagles in gilt. Turn ins are gilt ruled. Tree calf doublures. Silk moire endpapers. Illustrations, and facsimile correspondence. Illustrations in duplicate, with one on Japan paper. Many of the illustrations colored. One tipped-in manuscript letter in Vol. 1.

The binder, Ralph Randolph Adams (1/2 of Schleuning & Adams bindery) is highly regarded.

Condition -

See pictures. Some edge wear, chips at top of spines, board mark, etc..

Vol. 1 joints repaired sympathetically. Still some cracks at front joint, but inner hinges strengthened from spine to boards. Some color matching at front board that can be seen. Volume one 1st quire replaced with Japan paper, plates tipped on. In other books, some joints tender. Volume two - foldout letter has 4" tear. V4 front joint repaired. V7 front joint repair. V9 front and rear joint repair. The joints were repaired in such manner (inner spine to boards) to minimize visual impact. The inner hinges were not affected so the doublures and silk endpapers remain unaffected. Volume one was the most repaired, so I've included a picture of it, and its new inner quire.

No writing throughout set. No moisture. Some quires uncut. Occasional fox spot in endpapers, but I see none in the text block.

The set is very handsome, and will add greatly to any libraries shelves.
