Two fore-edge paintings reflecting Burns' life decorate the fore-edges of these 1839 Aldine series Poetical Works of Robert Burns, (Volumes One and Two, from a series of three). Volume one shows Burns' birthplace, Alloway. Volume two shows Ellisland, the farm built by Burns. Bindings are stamped on the pastedowns, "Bound by Hayday".

Each measures approx. 16 x 10 x 2 cm. Textured leather bindings, with five (small) raised cords on spine and "Burns" and "Vol." in gilt in two compartments. All edges gilt (AEG). Fore-edge paintings. Frontis of Burns in Volume One. Pages - 264 v.1, 336 v. 2.
See pictures. Front hinge repair to volume two, Japanese tissue; inner hinge cracked. Several rubs to front board of volume two. Some edge wear (corners) and shelf wear to both. No headbands. Ribbons expired. Some foxing to blank endpapers. Volume one front endpapers have a number of pencil bookseller notes. Frontis of V1 had wicked moisture leaving mark and foxing. V2 endpapers have graphite note of what the fore-edge painting subject is. Text blocks clean and clear of rips/marks. Volume one fore-edge painting has approx 1x1 cm place where the painting/gilt is worn.
