1909, #1 of 1250, From Poet to Premier, Thomas R Slicer, signed. Grolier Society. Fine binding, overlays, doublures.

A beautiful binding graces the boards of this #1 copy of From Poet to Premier. The doublures are especially beautiful, with gilt florals over purple crushed leather with white flower overlays (see pictures). Limited to only 1250 copies, this copy is signed by the author. The author writes of: Edgar Allan Poe, Abraham Lincoln, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Charles Darwin, Tennyson and Gladstone. The illustrator provides a portrait of each man.

About the Work -

From Rambling Recollections by A.D. Rockwell, M.D. (1920, p. 292-293) : “The Grolier Club published Slicer's book, From Poet to Premier, limiting the edition to twelve hundred and fifty copies. In it he writes most interestingly and feelingly of six men, all born in the same year, 1809. The article on Lincoln is especially good, but each is worthy of the personality of which it treats.”

“The son of a Methodist minister of some distinction in Baltimore, Slicer himself became a Methodist minister. In the shouting revivals in an earlier day of that denomination, I remember his zeal and activity in urging the unrepentant to the mourners' bench. His emotional nature had full sway without let or hindrance. In a few years he tired of this, and we find him preaching as a Congregational minister, and soon after he became a Unitarian. He ministered for some years among a fine people in Providence, R. I. Thence he went to Buffalo, and while there he was active in civil affairs and other good work outside his church.”

See pictures. Handsome book! Slight ghost of near book on front board. Occasional rub and edge/joint wear. Front joint may has small crack. Top board corners lightly bumped. Silk moire endpapers slighly frayed at edges; front silk has a mark. A small separation between the flyleaf and the text block at the gutter. Blank unpaginated front endpaper has crease down center (likely folded at some point). .5 cm black dot at bottom of 1/2 title page and ghosted onto facing endpaper. There is an occasional singular foxing mark. Tissue guards in place. Occasionally the pages have not been cut open; conversely, on occasion they pages were cut open a little rough. Page 22 has the yellowed ghost of an inserted card no longer present. Rear silk moire flyleaf has several pin holes, like a note was tacked to it. Despite any condition considerations, it's really an attractive book and nice in hand.
