The complete works of William of Auvergne (Bishop of Paris), this copy an artifact of early European/Spanish colonization of the Americas. Francisco de Toral signature within, twice, while in Puebla de Los Angeles. Puebla was a city established by Spain in Mexico in 1531, and de Toral was stationed in the Puebla region from 1542 to 1561, when he was reassigned as the first Bishop of the Yucatan.
The library in Puebla has a matching signature in an incunable (book printed before 1500) they've posted to their website. To review go the the Lafragua Library's home page, scroll down to the "Exposicions Digitales", select "Incunables", and when the exhibition launches review the 7th entry, "1486 Sermones Discipulis...", which also has a similar de Toral inscription.
The inscription in this book reads (roughly): "De Sn Frn Co (San Francisco) de Los Angeles, Fr(ey) Francis de Toral."
There is a second de Toral signature pasted in at the end of the 1st book.
Also, the marca de fuego (firebrand) of Puebla is found on the top-edge of the text block. This can be confirmed in the Catalogo Colectivo de Marcas de Fuego, brand BF-12049.
This places this copy in Mexico in the middle of the 16th century! A fantastic provenance; this book would be a great addition to many different collections including: Latin America, Exploration, Early European America, etc..
