A richly illustrated catalogue of 18th century genealogical research and heraldic references. Printed in 1764, in Nuremberg, Germany, the title translates as:
Handbook of the latest genealogy and heraldry, which includes all the current European potentates, family tables and coats of arms. With a correct description of the coat of arms and an outline of the heraldic or heraldic finds included.
The work opens with a wonderful frontispiece showing an angel copying a family tree, using death as a podium, with armor, books and gold laying haphazardly upon the ground, an hourglass next to them.
Two foldouts show the proper way to arrange a heraldic device. A calendar, to begin the work, showing the phases of the moon, holidays and etc., harkens back to the medieval Book of Hours and the calendar which begins them.
128 heraldic woodcuts (for 136 entries, some heraldic devices left blank). Many are elaborate.
Gatterer taught history at the University of Gottingen.
Ex libris of Mojmir Helcelet, with his signature on the rear pastedown. Helcelet is a noted Czech bibliophile.

See pictures. Likely previously restored. Some edge and shelf wear with corners worn, occasional rub, etc.. Start of crack at top of rear joint and bottom of front joint. Spine has loss to gilt (it seems like someone has used a consolidator, the gilt is not coming off now).
Ex libris plate on the pastedown (rear of front board). Many bookseller notes on the blank unpaginated front endpapers. Frontis and title page toned and soiled. Repair to title page, no text affected. Upper corner bumped through page 35. Bottom corner foxed at pages 44-49 and 53-56. Oddly very clean text block, with some woodcuts much darker than others; possibly the book was washed. Occasional fox spot. Rear 40 leaves have toning. Rear pastepaper flyleaf trimmed at gutter, and another library ex libris at rear pastedown. A handsome book, with many elaborate examples of heraldry; a pleasure to review.
