Italy travel guide. 1610 Itinerario Overo Nova Descrittione de'Viaggi Principali d'Italia. 1st Italian edition.

The first Italian edition of Franz Schott's Italian travel book, complete with all three parts. Bound handsomely with vellum spines and corners, with marbled paper covered boards.

Franz was the brother of Andreas, the prolific Jesuit author, and this printing was mistakenly attributed to Andreas on the title page. Or, were they taking advantage of the brother's greater fame? All Italian editions attributed the work to Andreas until 1650.

Full title: Itinerario Overo Nova Descrittione de'Viaggi Principali d'Italia

About the Work -

Franz Schott authored a pilgrim's guide to Italy for the Jubilee of the 1600s, in Latin. The work was very popular and translated into many languages. This copy is the first Italian edition of 1610. The book functions much like a modern travel guide, divided into areas, with a heading of each specific place, and then a description.

Provenance -

The title page has an ownership inscription which has the words "Pfyffer", and "Altis Hoffen" (right side margin). The Pyffer von Altishofen family is an important Swiss family, considered "the most powerful family in Lucerne during the early modern period" (Pfyffer,Historical Dictionary of Switzerland, 2010).

Physical Attributes -

Measures approx. 15.5 x 10 x 3.5 cm. Vellum spine and corners with marbled papers over the boards. Title in gilt on calf overlay on the spine. Some gilt rolls cross the spine. Pages - (1), a8, b7 (8 missing), 147, 113, 73, (1). Pagination a8, b7, A-S8, T4; Aa-Oo8 (sign Hh misbound); Aaa-Hhh8, Iii7 (missing last leaf). Woodcuts at each part's title page. OCLC# 30141184.

Condition -

See pictures. Likely a 19th century binding, some wear, sunning, etc. A little dusty. Some ownership inscriptions on title page, one chip on edge, and spot at bottom. Top right corner of 1st five pages lightly chipped. Some damp staining throughout. Occasional fox spots and toning. Lacking final leaf of table, 1st book (signature b8). Also lacking final leaf in third book, after "Il FINE", so either it was a colophon or blank. Pages 24-40 have ink mark at fore-edge, no text affected. Also several small ink spots in text block (circa .5 cm). Very slightly splayed (gets slightly wider towards fore-edge). Despite notes, a well-put-together book, not fragile and easy to review. Hinges/joints work well on the binding.
