A beautiful fine binding, with two fore-edge paintings, homes this scarce 1802 A Small Collection of Private Devotions. Formerly owned by a member of the prestigious Grolier Club (private society of bibliophiles). The endpapers are filled with manuscript prayers.
The Work -
"A considerable portion of the following Collection of Prayers was originally written by a Lady of Distinction and Piety. They are now re-published with many alterations and additions. The present Editor has been requested to subjoin an Address to the Deity, extracted wholly from the New Testament, with no other addition to the words of Scripture, than such was necessary to carry on the connection between the several parts. It may be read at leisure, and in different portions, as shall be found most convenient..."
Fore-Edge Paintings -
In one direction is a View of Rye, Sussex, and in the other a stormy Nautical scene.
With the ex-libris bookplate of the bibliophile/collector Charles Walker Andrews, a Grolier Club member from 1902 to 1938.
The prayers seem to have a name at their head, (William C(?) Towers (or Towns)).
Only one copy, and one edition, listed in OCLC (a world-wide library catalogue). OCLC #70987283, resides in The Styberg Library.
