A wonderful "Autograph Note Signed" (ANS) by John G. Whittier. It includes the last six lines of his poem, Trust, with the slightest variance. It is certified by Beckett Authentication Services, and in a presentation case from Beckett. It is dated 1875, and Whittier notes that he is in Amesbury. It reads:
This answer learned I at my mother's knee:
"All is God that is, or is to be,
And God is Good." Let this suffice us still
Resting with child-like trust upon his will
Who moves to His great ends unthwarted
by the ill.
A small variation from the printed edition is notable, Whittier capitalized "His", perhaps showing a reverence towards God greater than his editor's (or, might be grammatically wrong; I couldn't say).
Physical Attributes -
Paper measures approx. 12 x 8.5 cm.. Case measures 18 x 11 cm..
Condition -
See pictures. The Becket case is a wonderful protective case for this piece. The card inside shows a little wear. Occasional foxing spots. Bottom right corner is a little damaged. You can tell that it was cut from the bottom half of a page. Rear shows evidence that it was pasted into something, and then removed. It was likely the paste-down of a book, which someone removed. Faint "450-" on rear in graphite.
