Virgil Solis' Biblical Figures (Biblische Figuren) engravings; this binding includes both the Old and New Testament publications of Virgil; two hundred and sixteen Biblical images in total.
The popularity of the scenes in this work often resulted in missing pages, but this copy has all but the colophon of the old testament, and the last engraved leaf (p3) of the new testament (216 of 218 images).
About Virgil Solis -
Virgil Solis or Virgilius Solis (1514 – 1562), a member of a prolific family of artists, was a German draughtsman and printmaker in engraving, etching and woodcut who worked in his native city of Nuremberg. His prints were sold separately (mainly the etchings and engravings) or formed the illustrations of books (normally the woodcuts). Jost Amman was an assistant of Solis' before starting his own workshop.
This is the second edition (1st in 1560 with 147 woodcuts), which was expanded with nearly seventy more engravings.
