1900 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum. Likely first edition; early state of one plate.

$749.99

An early copy of the Wizard of Oz, with the double dots on the sun on the plate "You must be a great sorceress."

This copy is missing five pages, and five plates, and is rebound for library use.

I think it was in circulation from 1900 to 1918 (the date on the library card). During that time it suffered a few scribbles, some page-edge tears, lost pages, a library rebinding, etc..

Despite the condition only three pages with text are missing, so it's an affordable opportunity to read the first edition in the comfort of your home. Most early copies sell for thousands of dollars.

Without the binding, it is difficult to say exactly which "state" of the 1st edition this copy is, but the dots on the sun, previously noted, are regarded as an early printing point which was quickly changed. But the "tin" on 227 has been updated, and the stork's eye is wide, so it's a "mixed" state of the 1st edition.

Missing five leaves (title, 13/14, 15/16, 257/258, colophon) and five plates (19 of 24 present).
