1852 Principles and Practice of Surgery, by Pirrie and Neill. 316 engravings!

Sorry, this item has sold.

A pre-Civil War medical volume, with three hundred and sixteen engravings illustrating the developing practice of surgery in the United States. Handsome in its leather binding. The work provides a very-visual reminder of the somewhat brutal mid-1800s surgery as our country headed into a civil war in which these procedures would be practiced en masse.

Physical Attributes -

Measures approx. 24 x 15 x 5 cm. Calf binding. Label on spine, with title in gilt. Red edges. Illustrated. Pages - title, dedication, preface (numbered xxi to xxxii), 33-784, 32 pages of advertisements. The copy scanned to Google, hosted at Lane Medical Library, shares the same strange numbering to the introductory pages, so no pages are missing.

Condition -

See pictures. Vintage patina, with the pleasing look of history. Binding with edge wear, rubbing, etc.. Front joint crack 1" at top. Also, top of spine a little cracked.

Water mark at bottom 1/3 of book throughout, more noticeable at front.

Some toning, foxing, thumbing, etc. throughout. Blank front endpaper has crayon drawing of lungs, with "made by Lockwood"; also pencil Northwestern M.C. in an old hand, and stamp of Joseph Holman. Page 271 was torn but old repair with paper, not tape. Top corner of 541 chipped. Occasional dog-eared corner. Gathering signed "34" just slightly proud. Strangely the preface numbering begins at xxi, but it doesn't appear as any pages are missing.
