1st edition. 1846 Expedition to Borneo of HMS Dido for the Suppression of Piracy by Henry Keppel

The first edition of The Expedition to Borneo, of H.M.S. Dido for The Suppression of Piracy, with extracts from The Journal of James Brooke, esq. of Sarawak (Now Agent for the British Government in Borneo). This copy complete with all plates and maps called for (although one bound at the wrong location).

Henry Keppel was deployed in operations against Borneo pirates while in charge of the H.M.S. Dido. This is Keppel's description of that tour. Some of the plates in the work depict battles, others local cultures.

This is a unique copy, as it has appropriately spent time in the orient; it wears the bookbinder tickets of a Hong Kong binder (and the receipt is tucked-in).

Price reflects condition; at the time of this listing it is by far the most-affordable 1st edition, complete with all the plates and maps.

Physical Attributes -

Each volume measures approx. 22 x 14 x 3 cm. Leather-like spine and corners, with the title in gilt on the spine. Illustrated (I double-checked to make sure all plates and maps were present; they are, but the The Attack on Paddi is not where the index calls for it to be). Complete in two volumes. 1st edition.

Condition -

See pictures. Price reflective of condition. Rebound cheaply in Hong Kong in the 1960s. Possibly missing half-title pages, unless the frontis was counted in the pagination. Toned throughout, with some chipping to page edges, page edge tears etc. Some foxing throughout. Occasional thumb, etc. Paper a little brittle. Title page was hinged to frontis in binding and has cracked off (but present). All the maps seem to be repaired in the same binding, but still have some edge tears, etc.. The books are not perfectly square at the binding. One gathering a little loose at the gutter, hence proud at the fore-edge, so a little chipped at fore-edge. The most affordable 1st edition on the market, with all the plates and maps.
