A first edition, presentation copy of William Somervile's best-regarded work, The Chace.
A note on the flyleaf (1st blank leaf) says "Edward Digby Ex Dono Authoris 1735". Edward Digby was the Tory representative for Warwickshire. William Somervile's estate was in Warwickshire.
This copy lacks the frontis illustration.

Condition -
See pictures. Binding well worn, with the front joint repaired (Japanese vellum toned to match) and some cracking to rear joint. Also, edge and corner wear and rubbing. Tissue repair at front hinge. Shelf mark on front pastedown. Inscription on flyleaf. First two blank leaves and title page with foxing; through rest of text block foxing is mostly from thumbing (fore-edge margin) with an foxing in the text. Ink spot at bottom and top margin of leaf signed "a". No frontis illustration.
