1606 Maison Rustique or The Countrey Farme...translated into English by Richard Surflet. 2nd English edition. Illustrated. Agriculture.

The second English edition (1606) of this thorough work on renaissance era farming (the first edition was printed in 1600, translated from a 16th century work French work, Maison Rustique). With these extensive agricultural works we see the influence of the Renaissance era in agriculture. This work was far-reaching, useful and important; it was very successful and translated into many languages and editions.

This copy shows signs of being well used, but it's been restored and is missing only one leaf (p.347/8, with an illustration of a labyrinth).

A remarkable work, it is essentially a "how-to" for farming (or, more popular now, self-sufficiency) with sections dedicated to husbandry, recipes, medicines, distilling, clothing designs, surveying, etc.. This work is sometimes collected specifically for its hunting section labelled "A short collection of the hunting of the hart, wilde bore, hare, fox, fray, cony; of birds and faulconrie". Illustrations include the parts of a cow and horse, fashionable clothing designs, methods of distillery, and methods of surveying/land layout.
