2-in-1, 1615 Concilii Tridentini Canones et Decreta, with 1614 Index Librorum Prohibitorum

Sorry, this item has sold.

1615 edition of the Canones et Decreta emanating from the Council of Trent. Also, at the rear, the printer included the 1614 banned books list of the Catholic Church, Index Librorum Prohibitorum, an infamous tool of the inquisition; while it is paginated separately, the signatures of the gatherings prove this to be printed along with the Council of Trent.

The Council of Trent convened from 1545 to 1563, prompted by the Protestant Reformation, it has been described as the embodiment of the Counter-Reformation. The council issued condemnations of "heresies" committed by the proponents of Protestantism. But the Council also reformed the church, including its liturgy and laws.

Of note, the third council confirmed the Nicene Creed and it's here printed on p22 (rough translation in English, "I believe in God the Father, almighty maker of heaven and earth...").

In the eighteenth session the council created the commission to prepare the list of forbidden books, which is here printed at the rear of the work.
