19th century manuscript notebook. French, English and German language exercises.

Sorry, this item has sold.

A fascinating 19th century journal, well-kept and bright, which appears to be language studies (mostly) in English, German and French. There are "exercises", many dated 1853, explanations of terms (some complex, I learned the word "elision"), passages from literature works, etc.. There is even a marriage license copied, at the rear, from an 1825 New York Parish Register, copied in 1868 by "E. W. Anihony", who is perhaps the author of this volume. There is some history of Anihony in New York. Anihony copied the record of John Cole and Catherine Irwin of Troy, NY.

Physical Attributes -

Measures approx. 21 x 17 x 1 cm. Leather spine with marbled paper covered hardcover boards. Spine with five raised bands. All edges washed green. Approx. 50 leaves. Approx. 10 leaves blank.

Condition -

See pictures. Very nice binding and endpapers, probably done later. 1st blank leaf has a somewhat messy inscription, and a newer note at the bottom "1853?". A little toning, and occasional fox spots throughout (more foxing/thumbing on blank endpaper paper). One German leaf, near the middle, seems mounted and has a crease across the middle.
