A delightful 18th century collection of tales celebrating Orientalism, including The Tales of the Genii (in two volumes) by Sir Charles Morell, Solyman and Almena by Dr. Langhorne, Zadig, or, The Book of Fate by Voltaire (translated by Ashmore) and Almoran and Hamet (in two volumes) by Hawkesworth.
Each work with its own frontis, title page, and pagination. All were printed in 1780 by Harrison and Co.
While it's not uncommon to find these works bound with other works, it is rare to find this specific collection, which has the Middle East as its central theme. At the time I listed this book, there isn't a similar collection available on the market (using Vialibri).
Physical Attributes -
Measures approx. 21.5 x 13 x 3 cm. Leather spine and corners, sprinkled paper covering the boards. Spine with five raised bands; one compartment with "Tales of Genii" on red morocco, and one with the other three titles in gilt (no morocco). Four works bound into one volumes. Illustrated. Tales - xvi, 17-235 (1 frontis, 5 plates). Solyman - iv, 5-35 (one frontis illustration). Zadig - vi, 7-41 (one frontis illustration). Almoran iv, 5-53 (1 frontis, one plate).
Condition -
See pictures. Binding with wear to edges and corners, rubbing to boards, etc. Front joint cracked 1/2 way, starting from top. Some wear at top of spine. Front endpaper with some cracking at the hinge (but not all of it). FFEP with dog-eared bottom corner. Some toning, fox spots, thumb marks, etc. throughout. 1st blank unpaginated endpaper with several marks, light. B2 and B3 shaken, holding on by only top tie. Several small ink marks at bottom margin of B1 verso (no text affected). Tea stain on 18 and 19, light. Some moisture intrusion marks from bottom edge, mostly only marginal. Missing bottom corner of 57. 15 of Zadig dog-eared. 1" tear bottom-edge Almoran 13.
Despite notes, the book presents well, with a pleasing sense of history. Fully functional and readable.
