With a fore-edge painting of Canterbury, and Canterbury Cathedral, an 1868 printing of Arthur P. Stanley's Historical Memorials of Canterbury, given in a prize binding of Marlborough College in 1872. Stanley's well-illustrated work delves into the landing of Augustine, the murder of Becket, Edward the Black Prince and Becket's shrine.
About the Binding -
The medallion on the front board is that of Marlborough College in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. The fore-edge painting depicts the famous cathedral around which most of the book is set.

Measures approx. 18.5 x 12 x 3 cm. Fore-edge painting. Crushed calf binding. Boards with frames of fillet in blind, with corner fleur-de-lis, and the front board with a central gilt medallion of Marlborough College. Spine with five raised bands ruled in blind fillet, five compartments with a central fleur-de-lis, one compartment with the title in gilt on morocco. All edges gilt (AEG). Marbled endpapers. Condition -
See pictures. Some darkening to top 1/3 of leather boards. Some edge and corner wear with a few rubs to the binding. A little crazing along spine leather. Small chip at top corner of flyleaf. Paper toned throughout with an occasional fox spot; blank unpaginated endpapers with a few more spots. 1st blank unpaginated endpaper with 1872 "prize" inscription, and several bookseller notes. 1 cm tear at fold of fold-out of Canterbury.
