1587 De La Noblesse, Anciennete Remarques et Merites d'honneur de la troisiesme Maison de France. L'Angelier, Paris.

Sorry, this item has sold.

1st edition of this 1587 humanist history of the rulers of France, which covertly tried to place the Capetians on the throne of France (G.H. Pertz verified this hypothesis with his 19th century examination of the Richer de Reims Chronicle).

This work is traditionally attributed to Nicolas Vignier, but Vignier himself is quoted twice (p. 70-71). A Rome copy bears a contemporary handwritten note attributing the work to the humanist Francois Pithou.

This copy bears the ex-libris of Victor Duchataux (1823-1905), lawyer and author in Reims.

The pagination and signing of the gatherings of this work are slightly odd, indicating a serious revision late into the printing run. If you are a collator, you must be careful with this book. It collates complete, matching the Universal Short Title Catalogue collation, but note that after the C signature, there is a small insert of 2 leaves, signed C1 and C2, that throw the pagination askew as well. But the collation is complete, and the guide word between C2 and D1 matches.
