A fun fore-edge painting, easily identifiable as Dinant, Belgium, since it looks largely the same today!
Christian Retirement (rest) was written by Thomas Shaw Bancroft Reade. The work enjoyed great success, with many editions. While I didn't find a biography for Mr. Reade, his unique name allowed me to find that: he lived in Leeds, he authored "Christian Retirement", "Christian Experience" and "Christian Meditations", Reade's son was admitted to Trinity College Cambridge (becoming a successful priest) and Thomas Shaw Bancroft Reade died in 1841.
Physical Attributes -
Measures approx. 18 x 11 x 3 cm. Green leather publisher's binding, boards decorated in blind. Spine with five raised bands, each compartment richly impressed in blind, except one with "Christian Retirement" in gilt. All edges gilt. Fore-edge painting hidden under the gilt. Turn-ins decorated with a gilt roll.
Condition -
See pictures. A lot of wear along the edges, including the joints and spines. Spine a little sunned, as typical for green bindings. Endpapers cracked at gutter. 1854 gift inscription on pastedown. Small fore-edge tear to flyleaf repaired by a small piece of paper being glued to the verso. Also, some bookseller notes on verso. Light toning throughout. 1 cm fox spot on 72/73. Last blank leaf creased and with tear to fore-edge (3 cm). Someone pasted the rear flyleaf to the pastedown, then tried to get it up so there's some damage to the paper that is serving as pastedown (visible in pictures).
