Hippocrates. 2 works in 1. 1657 Medicorum Omnium and 1662 Oeconomia Hippocratis

$1,099.99

Two expansive works of Hippocrates, in parallel Latin and Greek, in large imposing folio format, bound in a handsome binding with a coat-of-arms applied to the boards.

The first work is the medical works of Hippocrates. The title page explains the work well:

The Works of the Great Hippocrates, Chief of all Physician.
In eight sections, according to Erotian. Anew illustrated with Latin Interpretation and Annotations by Anutius Foesius (Anuce Foes), Physician of Metz.
Additions: the Greek Commentaries of Palladius have been added to the 6th section, various readings on all the books, newest and corrected of all editions have been added (with commentaries by Jan van Heurne, the Dictionary of Erotian, Glossary of Galen, etc)

In this first work, for some reason the 7th and 8th book are given their own title page, but the pagination and collation remains ongoing (although the title page is mounted, and not part of the gathering of 6 it resides in).

The second work, with its own pagination and collation, is the Oeconomia of Hippocratis. This is, essentially, a specialized dictionary and encyclopedia for the works of Hippocrates produced by Anutius Foesius (Anuce Foes). The French biography of Foes states that this work includes commentary on the obscure works of Hippocrates.

Provenance -

Take this as a grain of salt, but AI thinks that the coat-of-arms might represent the Gozzadini family (the blank to the upper right of the shield would be silver, and the vertical lines to the bottom left would be red; this coloring of a shield can be seen at Ulisse G. Gozzadini's wikipedia site).

Bibliographic Details -

USTC doesn't have the 1557/1662 medical work. The USTC for the second Foes work is 6123442; not rare, found in many of the world's best libraries.

The Hippocrates work is listed in Worldcat OCLC as catalogue number 29163398.

Physical Attributes -

Measures approx. 38 x 25 x 8. Vellum binding over hardcover pasteboard boards. Boards with a greek key outer frame, a leafy floret inner frame (with corner florets) and a central coat-of-arms to both boards. Spine broken into six compartments by greek key rolls; each compartment with a central gilt summerhouse surrounded by leafing plants.

Pages - (24 introductory leaves), 1344, [26 leaves at rear of index, etc]; viii, 418

Collation - cross-4cross6, A-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Zzz6, Aaaa-Hhhh6, Iiii5, title page to volume 2, Iiii6 leaf, Kkkk-Zzzz6, A4a-V4v6, Xxxxx8, cross-3cross6; para4, A-Z6, Aa-Ll6, Mm5 (possibly missing a last leaf Mm6 which would likely be blank or have a colophon; the USTC does not mention a leaf after page 418).

Condition -

See pictures. Binding with a little waviness and a Japanese tissue repair at the front board's hinge/joint; some darkening along edges where hands hold it. A chip in the front pastedown.

Oddly, someone pasted the front endpaper, including the protective tissue, to the verso of the frontis, covering up the 1/2 title; it's partially exposed now as some of the glue loosened.

Some toning and fox spots throughout the text block, not excessive (more at front due to handling). Occasional page-edge chip, thumb, dog-eared/chipped corner, candle ember spot, stray ink mark, etc. Occasional moisture mark from edges. 1" tear from fore-edge page 1047/48. Likely missing a blank at end of second book, which would have been signed Mm6.
