1837 complete four volume Works of Goldsmith, in wonderfully appropriate green leather. Includes Goldsmith's classic work The Vicar of Wakefield. Full title: The Miscellaneous Works of Oliver Goldsmith, M.B. including A Variety of Pieces Now First Collected by James Prior, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries; Member of the Royal Irish Academy; Author of the Life of Goldsmith, Life of Burke, etc. etc.

About Goldsmith -

An essayist, novelist, poet, and playwright, Goldsmith was born in Kilkenny West, County Westmeath, Ireland. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, and studied medicine in Edinburgh but never received a medical degree. He traveled to Europe in 1756 and eventually settled in London. He worked as a writer and was friends with the artistic and literary luminaries of the time, including Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Edmund Burke.

Physical Attributes -

Each book is 22 x 13.5 cm. Set is 15 cm in width. Leather. Five raised spines. Fillets frame the boards. Edges rolled. Four of the six spine compartments have gilt decoration with a center fleur-de-lis; "1837" in gilt at the bottom of each spine.

Pages - Vol. 1, 580 pages. Vol. 2, 551 pages. Vol. 3, 500 pages. Vol. 4, 512 pages.

Condition -

See pictures. Shelf wear with edges rubbed, occasional scrapes, etc. Spines evenly sunned to brown. Spine labels are missing. Dust on top edge. Name on blank unpaginated page at the beginning of each volume. No other writing. No tears.

Provenance -

WINTHROP STUYVESANT EMMET - A navy officer during World War II, he received the Croix de Guerre and helped try Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg in 1945.Later he worked as a lawyer in New York City, with the exception of several years as a trust officer with First National City Bank. In retirement he served a term as president of the Norman Rockwell Museum, in Stockbridge.
