A wonderful Edgar Allan Poe set, complete in 10 volumes. Illustrated, and with a short biography of the author by James Russell Lowell. A limited edition, only 1,000 copies of this set were released by the publisher. Rare, I can't find another copy on the market at this time. Labelled, The New Fordham Edition, in honor of Poe's last residence.
I see all the classic works (Murders in the Rue Morgue, Tell-Tale Heart, etc.)
A distinct pleasure will be exposing The Raven (see pictures), which remains unopened.
At least several artists are represented, but the frontispieces seem to largely be the work of F. Gordon Edge. There are other decorative touches, such as the 1845 title page prefacing The Raven.
The books are in their original publisher's boards, and seem a prime candidate for fine binding.
About the Author and Works -
Edgar Allan Poe ( 1809 –1849) was an American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and American literature as-a-whole, and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. Poe is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.
About the Illustrator -
F. Gilbert Edge is best remembered for his poster artwork now. At the time he enjoyed success also as a cartoonist, now noted for an early cartoon of Wilbur Wright flying. He worked in New York (at the New York World among others) before heading to Baltimore as the leading cartoonist of the Baltimore Herald (Aug. 27 1904 Fourth Estate).
