1700 Satyrae, Quintus Sectanus (Lodovico Sergardi). Fine binding. Elsevier

Sorry, this item has sold.

A beautiful pair, printed in 1700, with mottled leather binding hosting rich spine gilt decoration, marbled edges, pink and green endbands, and beautiful period correct marbled endpapers.  Still striking, when new they would have been extravagant.

Satires, critizing late 17th century Italian culture in the style of the Latin poet Juvenal. An interesting printing, I find reference that it was not actually printed by the famed Elsevier family (as claimed on the title page), although I can’t find a source for this rumour.

“The Latin satires of Lodovico Sergardi, or " Quintus Sectanus," were circulated long before their publication in 1696, and are extra ordinary for their rank vigour, which is mainly exercised with frantic injustice at the expense of (Gian Vincenczo) Gravina. … On the whole, Italy ranks high in this kind of verse, and her classical inspiration is strong, independent, and direct.” – (Elton, The Augustan Age, 1899)

Volume two has a number of emblems accompanying the text.
