A beautiful fore-edge painting shows a punt (shallow boat propelled by pole) and several recreators, on and by the river Isis, with Oxford in the background.
The work it decorates is an 1801 edition of the Book of Common Prayer.
Based on the binding style (typical for early 19th century) and painting style (lighter application, and almost impressionistic), I would guess this to be an early fore-edge painting (many were painted at later dates).
Possible Provenance
Edward Edwards signed a front endpaper. This is likely the noted 19th century British librarian, who was engaged for several years at Oxford. This also leads credence to the fore-edge painting being a true 19th century example.
Physical Attributes
Measures 19 x 11 x 3 cm. Black, straight grain Morocco leather binding. Fillet border with inside leaf/circle roll. 6 compartments to spine, with double tulip rolls and three fillets seperating them, each with a central flower in gilt, and one with the title "Prayer". Turn-in has a leaf roll. Marbled endpapers. All edges are gilt. Fore-edge painting. Bottom endband is a double color of white and black.
Condition
See pictures. A little shelf wear at corners and bottom edge. A few rubs to back board. Top endband missing. Name inscription on blank unpaginated endpaper. Two of the pages at the beginning are placed together but I believe this was on purpose (printer's cancel); when put to a light it reveals the order of reading was cancelled. Overall, in great shape considering it's age.
Side Note
When I bought this it had no box/slip/etc., but based on its state I would guess it previously was within a protective cover (fairly common for fore-edge paintings). It would be a shame to lose its great condition; I would recommend a clam shell box for protection from sun, dust, etc..
