1695 Christelycke Onderwysingen ende Gebeden. Important, rare Dutch church work.

A very rare and important work in the Dutch church (see below). I find only one copy, printed before 1700, in the world's libraries, and no copies available for sale that were printed before 1750 (I searched using ViaLibri).

This was an important work of sober piety to the Southern Netherlands in the late 17th century, and was widely distributed. This copy was printed in Brussels, which at that time was the capital of the Netherlands.

“Polman has written about the specifically frugal character of the Dutch church book Christelycke Onderwysingen ende Gebeden (Christian Lessons and Prayers) and the way it differs from baroque books from the Southern Netherlands. See: Polman P., Katholick Nederland in de achttiended eeuw Part 1 (Hilversum, 1968) 131-133. Clemens also explored the sober piety in church books from the mission Hollandica. He looked at the enormous distribution of Christelycke Onderwysingen in the Southern Netherlands, and its limited popularity in the Northern Netherlands, suggesting that sober piety was not a 'Northern-Netherlandish' kind of Piety. See Clements Th., De godsdienstigneid in de Nederlanden… Part 2, 172.” – Meditatio – Refashioning the Self: Theory and Practice in Late Medieval and…, M. East, page 311.

Physical Attributes

Measures 17 x 10 x 3 cm. Five raised spines with compartments framed in filet with floral centerpieces. Blue and white endbands. Tooling around board edges. AEG (but faded).

Condition of the Book

See pictures. Contemporary binding is well worn at the edges, with chipping at top and bottom of spine (but both endbands are present). Leather itself has crazed a little. Ex library, with pencil call number on pastedown. Owner inscription on free front endpaper (Dutch, old hand). Title page stamped from and back with stamp of now defunct church library in New York. Text block is mostly clear and clean. Occasional spot. No writing. I found one one c.m. fore-edge tear. Endpapers toned. Library card pasted to the back pastedown. Despite wear, it feels structurally sound and the text block remains in a pleasing state.
