About the Literature
The History of Pendennis: His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and His Greatest Enemy (1848–1850) is a novel by the English author William Makepeace Thackeray. It is set in 19th-century England, particularly in London. The main hero is a young English gentleman Arthur Pendennis, who is born in the country and sets out for London to seek his place in life and society. In line with other Thackeray's works, most notably Vanity Fair, Pendennis offers an insightful and satiric picture of human character and aristocratic society. The characters include the snobbish social hanger-on Major Pendennis and the tipsy Captain Costigan.

Physical Attributes

1/2 leather fine binding with marbled paper boards. Spines have five raised ribs, and four compartments with gilt decoration, one compartment with "Pendennis Vol. 1" and one with "Thackeray's Works" on red morocco. All edges are marbled, and the endpapers are marbled. Pages - (1) Halftitle, Frontis, xii, 448 pages, (1) and (1), Halftitle, Frontis, Title Page, iv, 448 pages (1). This edition of Pendennis was printed in a run with a large set, The Complete Works of Thackeray (these being volumes 3 and 4).

Condition

See pictures. Slight discoloration to spine. A little shelf wear with the occasional scuff to boards, light/minor crazing on spine, rubbing at edges and corners. 1st several pages of Volume One have a light crease. Also, first several leaves of volumes one have some toning. There are is scattered spots of foxing here and there throughout the books. There are no tissue guards so the plates will sometimes ghost onto the facing page. Despite any flaws, these are enjoyable to read or peruse (thanks to the many illustrations) and look handsome on the shelf.
