An attractive fine binding holds this classic work by Samuel Johnson, The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets. Also, the binder used one of the most attractive endpaper designs I've seen, with a gilt cross-hatch that causes them to glow, reminiscent of the earlier Dutch Gilt endpapers.
The printing is undated, but the title page seems to have an "1858" on it. (Side note - The translation on the back of the title page, and the heavily annotated chapter on Milton, and the date, coincide with an 1862 publication by Henry Barnard on Milton's education).
