A 19th century collection of the Poetical Works of John Milton in handsome bindings. Includes Paradise Lost, and Paradise Regained. This work is annotated by other authors, and includes a Life of Milton.
The bindings are not in the best condition (see condition notes) but notable. There is a school crest on the front board, with the motto "Coll. Christi. Cant.". For me, more enjoyable is the Tudor rose at the top of the spine, and the portcullis at the bottom, both crowned. These bindings aren't signed, but an entry in Worldcat (#25235339) says that Wiseman stamped a matching binding.
Physical Attributes -
Each measures approx. 22 x 13 x 3.5 cm. Full burgundy leather bindings with a central armorial medallion to the front and rear board. Spine has five raised bands, with the title editor, and works within in three compartments in gilt, one compartment blanks, one compartment with the tudor rose, and one compartment with a portculis. All edges gilt. Complete in four volumes.
Condition -
See pictures. Note, rear board of Volume 2 is loose. Front board of volume 1 is repaired. There is cracking at some of the other joints. These books display very handsomely, but the bindings are needing attention, the joints feeling tight. There is a ghost of discoloration around the front board of volume one, likely from the repair. There is some marks, rubs, shelf wear, etc. to bindings. There is a pencil initial on the pastedowns. Hinges are cracked on each of them. No tissue guards present. No annotations. A little toning to pages. The text blocks are fairly clean. The bindings are handsome, it's just that the joints/hinges have not aged well.
