Nathaniel Hawthorne's last work, bound notably in vellum with gilt decoration including Romulus and Remus suckling at the wolf on the front boards. Beautiful brocade endpapers within, shimmering with gold! Also, 25 19th century photographs are tipped-in (one of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the other 24 of Italy, mostly Rome, its locations and artwork; although Florence, Venice and others too).
Note, the Tuachnitz copyright date is 1860 but he didn't every update despite later printings. The gift inscription in this set is 1889, so no later than that.
Interestingly, there are three titles to this work. The spine reads, "The Marble Faun", and the title page reads, Transformation, or The Romance of Monte Beni.
