A French language, Berlin printed, two volume 1752 edition of Viscount Bolingbroke's Letters on the Study of History and the True Use of Retirement.
Bolingbroke's was exiled from England, for a time, for his extreme views. His writings influenced republican's with John Adams saying he'd read each of Bolingbroke's works at least five times.
Physical Attributes -
Each volume measures approx. 17 x 10 x 1.5 cm.. Hardcovers with paper covered boards and calf spine and corners. Purple decorative endpapers. All edges sprinkled. Pages volume 1: xvi, 205. Pages volume 2: 205, 59, 12, 32.
Condition -
See pictures. Vintage patina, with the pleasing look of history. Some edge wear, corners exposed, rubs, etc.. Top of rear joint v.2 has 1" crack. Looks like an ex libris plate was removed from the pastedown in volume one. Lots of bookseller notes on back of flyleaf. Blank unpaginated front endpaper, in both volumes, stamped with "Dr. (?)", and foxed/toned/thumbed (all blank endpapers are). Text block shows some toning. Occasional thumb, fox spot, dog ear, etc..Little graphite parenthetical marks in the fore-edge margin, used to highlight important passages, throughout. Crack at gutter at 160/161 in volume 2.
